Thank you for the recommendation. However, from what I'm looking at, there are a lot of stuff I don't need that comes bundled with the suite, even in the Personal Edition SSuite. Not requiring Java or .NET is pretty cool but almost all the computers I work with, both are installed. In fact, I believe Windows 7 already comes packed with the .NET framework. Also, I don't think there is a Powerpoint like application with SSuite, which is a big deal for me. Nonetheless I will give it a try just to see how compatible it is with the Microsoft Office suite. Thank you once again.

I so enjoyed this blog entry. You did a fine job of explaining your opinions and experiences with using Ubuntu as a potential replacement for Windows. You gained my respect not only from your diligent attempt to stay neutral in comparing the two operating systems in question, but also for being a long-time user of Windows, not a Linux geek at heart.

I started out in the days of DOS and Windows 3.0. I tried Linux for the first time in 1995. At that time, I felt I didn't have the interest, the attention span or the smarts to convert over to Linux. It was a very hands-on O/S in its infancy; no one could argue over this point. Nonetheless, I continued to bounce in and out of the Linux world, trying whatever distro seemed to offer easier installation and more useful features for a Windows geek. It all started to come together with the adoption of Mandrake 8.0 and eventually solidified with the inception of Ubuntu. For the past ten years I have used Linux as my primary O/S and use Windows only to service my clientele.

Someday, Ubuntu (or any other Linux flavor available) will overcome all the cons you mentioned here. But until that happens, I will embrace and enjoy knowing that whether it be Ubuntu or some other Linux distribution, I have a choice. You're dead on about when a person should consider switching operating systems: when choice overcomes the normal desire to avoid change, when the mind is willing to accept the responsibilities that come with new adventures.

Thank you for a fine write. I look forward to referring this blog entry to potential Linux users.

You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

Their software also don't need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Seriously, that issue was driving me insane. I'm so glad you took the time to research it and actually detail it here.

However, I'm glad to inform you (if you didn't know already) that in the retail version of Windows 7, WMP12 clearly does not have the 'constant update' issue anymore. That was one of the main reason why a lot of people wanted to downgrade back to WMP11. I'm enjoying WMP12 right now with no problems whatsoever.

Whatever the case may be, thank you for posting your findings here. I will make a note at the beginning of the article to let other readers know.

Hey, ive founded the solution for #Edit1

1 - go to http://www.resplendence.com/download/ and download Registrar Registry Manager 6.50

2 - install

3 - in program, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.m3u\shell\Play\command

4 - delete DelegateExecute

5 - if u want to use WMP to play in other file types, just do the same as 4 step

6 - Done! Enjoy!

Your "measurement" of MSE's memory usage is ridiculou. You're only looking at the UI process (i.e. the tray icon, basically). You need to check the "Show processes from all users" box and look at MsMpEng.exe (and maybe a few other processes) as well...

Typically, MSE's memory usage is somewhere around 50MB

I'm sorry about what happened and I apologize for not writing back earlier but you should have emailed me instead! Anyways, while that has never happened to me in the past, a little research shows that you are not alone as a lot of other users experience the same frustration as you.

The good news is that you can download and install RevoUninstaller to get rid of Comodo Firewall. RevoUninstaller is a Add/Remove replacement for Windows and can uninstall applications even if they didn't come bundled with a uninstaller.

I have just tried this in my virtual machine and everything worked perfectly as RevoUninstaller picked up the firewall application. If it still doesn't pick up, try using the Hunter Mode and target the Comodo application that way.
