Rights to Close for Firefox

Finally, I have found this addon for Firefox! I had a feeling there wouldn’t even be one since what I was asking for seemed so mundane. Well, I was proved wrong. I simply wanted an addon that allowed me to easily close a tab/page within Firefox with my mouse. I was tired of having to move my mouse over every tab first before  I could close it. While I am using a very basic mouse with a wheel button, I didn’t want to download and install any third-party utilities on my laptop just for configuring the button settings. Even if I would have done so, I would have programmed the wheel button click to close the tab. However, we all know that sometimes we press that middle button by mistake so that wouldn’t have worked anyways. After some time with Google, I have stumbled across the Rights to Close (RtC) addon. This addon does one thing and one thing only and that is allowing you to close a tab in Firefox by simply double-clicking your right mouse button. Best part is that this works from almost anywhere within the page!

In case you’re wondering, there are two preventative measurements in place to prevent from accidental tab closure using RtC. First, you’ll need to perform the double right-click on your mouse button pretty fast to invoke RtC. There is a slight delay and I’m sure someone out there will complain that the delay is too long and that they always accidentally close their tabs with RtC. So far, I have never, ever accidentally invoked RtC and closed a tab that I didn’t want closed. Why? Well, this is due to the second preventive measure put in place. In order to successfully close a tab with RtC, your mouse cannot move between performing the double-click. No matter how fast you move the mouse from the first right-click to the second, the tab will not close! When you do want to invoke RtC to close your current tab, your mouse cursor can be pretty much be anywhere within the page. Then steady your mouse and double-click your right mouse button simultaneously. If done correctly, the tab will close. That’s all there is to it!  No more having to first navigate your mouse back onto the tab first before being able to close it within Firefox.

Within RtC’s option menu, you won’t find a lot of preferences to configure. In fact, you’re only allowed to configure one thing and that is to tell RtC what to do when you close the last tab (using RtC of course) in Firefox. You can either replace the last tab with a blank page or close the browser altogether.

If you want to do even more with your mouse within Firefox, then you must look at using mouse gestures to do your bidding. Mouse gestures allow you to move your mouse a certain way to perform certain tasks within Firefox. One addon that allows this is FireGestures (only one I can find at the moment that supports Firefox 4.0).
